Grodenberg Mediates Russia to Persuade Sana’a to Receive Him

UN Special Envoy for Yemen Hans Grundberg concluded a visit to Moscow where he met with Deputy Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation Vershinin Sergey Vasilievich, Deputy Foreign Minister and Special Presidential Representative for the Middle East Africa Mikhail Bogdanov.

Grodenberg asked Russia to use its relations with the actors in Yemen to reach a peaceful settlement, after the Sana’a authority refused to receive him because of what it considered an international insistence on not paying attention to the roots of the problem in Yemen.

Grundberg expressed his concern over the military escalation in Marib and the western coast, highlighting on the risks of further escalation.

We are facing a potential military escalation that will only increase civilian suffering, Grodenberg said.  Increased international efforts are necessary to convince all parties on the need to settle differences at the negotiating table.
