The French ambassador to Yemen, Jean-Marie Safa, launched an attack on what he described as “Houthis, in a move that reflects French anger after thwarting a new plot in the Security Council.
Safa called on “Houthis” to open up and receive the international envoy to Yemen, Hans Grodenberg, which is supported by the European Union led by France during its new session, Safa attack followed Grodenberg’s visit to Paris last week.
In this context, diplomatic sources revealed on the failure of European efforts in the Security Council that aimed to push for a new round of negotiations between Yemeni parties in the Swedish capital, Stockholm.
The sources reported that European parties supporting the envoy Grodenberg tried, during the last Security Council session, to push the Council to adopt a statement calling on all parties to return to the negotiating table. Noting that the envoy had envisioned the possibility of his country hosting the new round, which is the only one since the 2018 negotiations, which culminated in Hodeida Agreement, however, international parties such as Russia objected to Grodenberg’s project, as he did not even visit Sana’a.
Grodenberg had revealed during his last briefing at the Security Council his intention to launch a new initiative for a solution between the Yemeni parties, without revealing his story.
These developments may explain the reasons for French annoyance, which was hoping to pass a project in favor of coalition countries, which the French President visited a few days ago and concluded billions of dollars in armament agreements.
It is noteworthy that Sana’a, which stipulated the new envoy to “stop the aggression and lift the siege,” criticized what it described as “French-American-British arrogance.” Accusing these parties of trying to search for interests by playing a role as part of pledges within the war on Yemen.
