UNESCO Intervenes to Save 10,000 Homes in Old Sana’a City

UNESCO said on Saturday that it has begun work to rehabilitate 10,000 homes in the historic city of Sanaa, classified on the World Heritage List.

In the statement published today, the organization said that a new phase of its joint project with the European Union will be launched soon, and will include the rehabilitation of old Sana’a houses that were recently damaged due to the increasing challenges of climate change.

“The continued rehabilitation of historical buildings in the city will create job opportunities for thousands of young people through cash-for-work schemes,” the statement said.

The project managed, during the past four years, to rehabilitate 213 historical buildings in the old city of Sana’a, according to the statement.

The statement added that the organization would provide further support to strengthen disaster risk reduction measures and increase the preparedness of authorities and communities for emergency management, based on the flood prevention measures implemented along “Al-Sayla valley” in 2020.
