The Ministry of Fisheries issues a warning over the persistence of hostile activities in Yemeni territorial seas and the Socotra Islands

The Ministry of Fisheries has warned against the continuation of hostile activities carried out by the aggression forces in Yemen’s territorial waters and the Socotra Archipelago.

The ministry stressed in a statement the need to stop harmful, illegal, and unreported fishing methods, as well as putting an end to aggression forces’ practices of discharging poisonous and hazardous waste in Yemeni waters.

In addition to plundering hundreds of tons of coral stones and selling them to Gulf nations for use in building heritage sites, the statement confirmed that the practices of UAE forces have seriously affected fish and coral reefs.

According to technical reports, the ministry stated that 80% of the coral reefs off the coast of Yemen are at risk of imminent collapse and long-term threats and that 20% had already been devastated during the years of aggression with no hope of regrowth.

The Ministry of Fisheries noted that Yemen’s beaches and more than 186 islands in the Red Sea, Arabian Sea, and Gulf of Aden are covered with rare and distinctive coastal coral reefs. This represents roughly 25% of Yemen’s coastline.

The ministry emphasized that the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden are designated special areas under international accords and that the hostile activities taking place in these regions cause marine environmental pollution, the destruction of coral reefs, harm to marine organisms, and the contamination of seawater. It stressed how important it is to put a stop to these activities because they are illegal and may lead to the destruction of environmental resources in the region.

To respect regional accords and treaties for the conservation of the maritime environment, the ministry made an appeal to all interested parties in the local and international communities. It also urged joint cooperation in order to safeguard the region’s fish resources and marine environment.
