After the Pentagon’s failure to protect it, the largest carrier of US military supplies halts crossing the Red Sea

American company Maersk Line Limited has announced the suspension of transportation operations in the region until further notice, following the targeting of two American-flagged ships in the Red Sea, which forced them to change course.

Follow-ups – Al-Khabar Al-Yemeni:

Maersk Line Limited, a subsidiary of the Danish company Maersk, is considered the largest company involved in transporting US military and government cargo. According to the website G Captain, it is not only the largest owner and operator of ships flying the US flag and engaged in international trade but also the largest participant in Pentagon programs for transporting supplies to the US Army.

In a statement, the company revealed that its vessels, Maersk Detroit and Maersk Chesapeake, registered under the US Maritime Security Program and the Voluntary Intermodal Sealift Agreement with the US government, were attacked in the Red Sea while sailing under the protection of the US Navy.

The company’s statement exposed the US Navy’s failure to protect the ships and secure their return to the Gulf of Aden instead of securing their passage towards the northern Red Sea.

The ships were carrying cargo belonging to the US Department of Defense, the US Department of State, the US Agency for International Development, and other US government agencies, “thus enjoying the protection of the US Navy for passage,” according to Maersk.

The Yemeni armed forces announced the execution of an engagement operation with the US Navy, resulting in a direct hit on an American warship and forcing two other ships to retreat.

The American militarization of the Red Sea has exacerbated the problem of commercial shipping, as the region has become prone to military confrontations. This has led additional companies, including Kuwaiti Maritime Transportation, to announce the suspension of their operations in this corridor until further notice.
