Two million ‘hungry’ in Gaza and warning of ‘appalling’ situation

The executive director of the World Food Programme, Cindy McCain, said Monday that two million people in the Gaza Strip are suffering from acute hunger.

“Last month, a third of the trucks required to meet the needs did not reach the sector,” she said on her X account.

“Northern Gaza is the hardest hit, with only two trucks arriving to provide aid to thousands of hungry people,” she said.

She stressed the need to ensure safe and unhindered humanitarian access to avoid famine and save lives.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said in a statement posted on its website that “the new Israeli evacuation orders in Gaza have once again led to large-scale displacement, leaving civilians vulnerable to hostilities and denial of basic services.”
