The Palestinian Ministry of Health in the Gaza Strip announced an increasing need for blood units in light of the continuing rise in the number of wounded, in addition to the urgent need to meet the needs of blood and thalassemia patients in hospitals.
The Ministry confirmed in a press release on Tuesday that the stocks of laboratories and blood banks are completely depleted, and what is currently available does not meet operational requirements, especially with the increasing number of wounded.
The Ministry explained that the continued closure of crossings to medical supplies and laboratory equipment exacerbates the crisis, noting that blood units are the backbone of medical service provision.
The Ministry reported that hospitals in the Gaza Strip need 8,000 units per month to meet the needs of wounded patients and patients with blood and thalassemia.
The Ministry noted that it faces a major challenge in securing blood units from donors due to the deteriorating humanitarian conditions in the Strip, where citizens suffer from food, water, and medicine insecurity, affecting their ability to donate.
The Ministry confirmed that medical laboratories in hospitals in Gaza and the North are operating under emergency measures due to the lack of laboratory equipment and supplies. The Ministry of Health renewed its urgent appeal to citizens who are able to do so to visit operating hospitals and donate blood.
