The war in Gaza destroyed the central markets and lost many of their livelihoods

Gaza Municipality revealed that the city’s central markets suffered massive destruction as a result of the ongoing Zionist war of extermination on the Gaza Strip.

The municipality confirmed in a press release on Monday that these markets, a fundamental pillar of the local economy, “are now witness to the extent of the devastation they suffered, which directly impacted the daily lives and livelihoods of residents.”

The municipality added that many of the city’s markets were partially or completely destroyed, which in turn led to the loss of income for many vendors and workers in these markets. The complete destruction included the Sheikh Radwan Market, the stalls market in the Shuja’iyya neighborhood, and the vegetable market in the Shuja’iyya neighborhood.

It reported varying degrees of damage to other markets, in addition to the buildings in the Firas Market adjacent to the Archives building.

The municipality stated that, “As part of its tireless efforts to reactivate the city’s main markets, it organized a meeting to discuss the executive procedures for relocating the stalls on Al-Sahaba Street and the surrounding streets to the Yarmouk Popular Market.”

It indicated that the market has been equipped with all basic services, ready to receive the owners of the relocated stalls, with the aim of providing a suitable and supportive work environment.

The municipality explained that with the escalation of the aggression, work on this vital project was halted, as the Yarmouk Market was filled with displaced people’s tents, preventing the completion of the relocation of the stalls and the reactivation of commercial activity in the market as planned.

The municipality emphasized that these markets are an essential part of the lives of Gazans, as many families rely on them to meet their daily needs. It noted that “the damage resulting from this destruction has completely disrupted daily commercial activities, increasing pressure on the local economy and deepening social and humanitarian suffering.”
