The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has just issued several warnings of the unprecedented and severe humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip. This comes as the entry of humanitarian aid has been halted for more than 50 days.
Jens Laerke, spokesperson for the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, said that the prolonged cessation of food, basic goods, and commercial supplies has led to a sharp escalation in the humanitarian crisis. He added that the Gaza Strip is facing what he described as “the worst situation since the beginning of the escalation,” with clear signs of a rapid deterioration in the situation.
UN spokesman Stéphane Dujarric stated during a press conference in New York that food stocks in Gaza are now almost non-existent, while hospitals and health centers are facing severe shortages of medicines and vaccines, threatening the collapse of the health system.
Dujarric explained that more than 50 days have passed without any shipments of fuel, medical supplies, or food entering the Strip, at a time when the population, including children, is suffering from difficult living conditions and daily challenges in obtaining basic needs.
