Gaza Health: Severe shortage of blood units threatens the injured

The Palestinian Ministry of Health in the Gaza Strip warned on Sunday of a severe shortage of blood units and blood components in laboratories and blood banks, in light of the ongoing Israeli occupation aggression and the increasing number of seriously injured people.

The Ministry stated in a press release that the urgent need for blood is worsening by the day, while blood banks are unable to meet the required quantities.

It added that the current supply covers only a small portion of the monthly consumption.

The Ministry revealed that 10,000 units of blood and blood components were distributed last month to save emergency cases, while only 3,500 units were provided, reflecting the serious gap.

It emphasized that community donation appeals are no longer achieving their purpose due to worsening malnutrition and high rates of anemia among citizens, which reduces people’s ability to donate safely.

The Ministry of Health called for urgent intervention from relevant authorities and humanitarian and international organizations to strengthen blood bank reserves, ensuring the continuation of life-saving medical interventions in hospitals, especially with the daily increase in the number of wounded.
