The Director-General of the Palestinian Ministry of Health in the Gaza Strip, Dr. Munir al-Barash, stated that contaminated water is the primary cause of Guillain-Barré syndrome, stressing that treatment for this disease is unavailable in the Strip.
Al-Barash explained, speaking to Al Jazeera, that this viral disease begins with a sudden loss of muscle movement, indicating that it begins in the legs and then progresses upward, particularly affecting children.
In numbers, 95 people, including 45 children, have been diagnosed with Guillain-Barré syndrome in the Gaza Strip. Those affected suffer from a loss of neurological reflexes and difficulty breathing, reaching a critical stage and potentially leading to death.
Earlier on Monday, the Ministry of Health in the Gaza Strip announced the registration of three deaths from Guillain-Barré syndrome as a result of atypical infections and the worsening of severe malnutrition in the Strip.
In a statement, the Ministry warned of the widespread spread of the disease due to the deteriorating health situation and the lack of necessary treatments within the Strip.
