A UN official is sounding the alarm: the situation in Gaza is catastrophic

Israeli warplanes carried out airstrikes on the Mediterranean coast of Gaza City today.

A UN official told the BBC that the situation in Gaza City was “nothing short of catastrophic,” as Israeli tanks and troops continued their advance on the third day of the ground offensive.

Olga Cherevko, a spokeswoman for the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, said she observed a steady stream of Palestinians heading south during a recent visit to the city, but added that hundreds of thousands remained there.

The World Health Organization warned that overcrowded hospitals were on the verge of collapse because they were prevented from distributing life-saving supplies.
