UNRWA Commissioner: Gaza is now home to the largest number of child amputees in the world

The Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), Philippe Lazzarini, stated that “Gaza is now home to the largest number of child amputees in the world.”

He noted in a post on his official X page on Wednesday evening that the number of children with amputated limbs in Gaza is estimated at approximately 4,000 since the start of the war.

He noted that Gaza witnessed a difficult night last night, due to the killing and wounding of a large number of children, warning that “the damage inflicted on the children of the Strip goes beyond physical injury and widespread hunger.”

He added, “The scars of children are deep and invisible: anxiety, nightmares, aggression, and fear. Many are forced to beg, loot, or work, a lost childhood.”

He warned that the continuation of this situation increases the suffering of Gaza’s children due to the ongoing and worsening trauma, the effects of which will last for generations to come, stressing the need for an immediate ceasefire.
