Various parts of the city, coinciding with a water shortage and sewage leakage, are causing “environmental and health disasters” that threaten the lives of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians.
Municipality spokesman Asem al-Nabih warned of the worsening of these disasters in light of the widespread destruction caused by the two-year Israeli war of extermination and its repercussions, including a lack of resources and supplies to provide services.
Al-Nabih said, “Gaza City is suffering from several health and environmental disasters that threaten the lives of citizens, including water scarcity coupled with the accumulation of more than a quarter of a million tons of waste throughout the city.”
He emphasized that this waste “constitutes a health and environmental disaster that threatens the lives of citizens and leads to the spread of rodents and insects.”
He pointed out that the municipality is unable to resolve this crisis due to Israel’s destruction of more than 85 percent of its heavy and medium-sized equipment during the two-year war, and the lack of alternatives.
He also emphasized that the Israeli occupation prevents municipal crews from accessing the main landfill located in the border town of Juhr al-Dik, southeast of Gaza City. This area lies east of what is known as the “Yellow Line.”
