The Ministry of Health in Gaza: 25% of cases of amputation in the sector are children

The Ministry of Health in the Gaza Strip announced on Wednesday that 6,000 amputations have been recorded during the two years of the Israeli war on the Strip, and indicated the urgent need for “urgent and long-term” rehabilitation programs for the injured. This came in a statement on the occasion of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, which falls on December 3rd each year.

The Ministry stated: “6,000 amputation cases registered with the Ministry of Health require urgent and long-term rehabilitation programs.”

It added that “25 percent of all amputation cases are children facing permanent disabilities at a young age,” noting that “the lack of medical resources and assistive devices exacerbates the suffering of amputee victims.”

The Ministry continued, “The profound human suffering endured by thousands of wounded individuals and their families underscores the urgent need for rehabilitation services and psychosocial support.”

The Ministry called on international organizations to “direct their urgent attention to amputee victims in Gaza and enhance opportunities for specialized care and rehabilitation.”
