The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) reported that severe storms and resulting flooding in Gaza have claimed lives and affected nearly 55,000 families, forcing the evacuation of at least 370 families from coastal areas.
In its latest report on the situation in the Gaza Strip, the agency stated that the actual impact is likely much higher, particularly in high-risk, unmanaged locations where hundreds of thousands of people live in low-lying, coastal, or debris-strewn areas prone to flooding.
Since December 10, an estimated 17 buildings have collapsed, and more than 42,000 tents or temporary shelters have been completely or partially damaged, affecting at least 235,000 people.
UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini warned that recent gains in food security and nutrition remain fragile. He added that although the Gaza Strip is no longer classified as suffering from famine, 1.6 million people still face high levels of food insecurity.
