Gaza Health: An abortion and a decline in births by 40%

The Director General of the Ministry of Health in the Gaza Strip, Munir al-Barsh, revealed a significant increase in miscarriages, coinciding with a sharp decline in the number of newborns by 40% compared to last year, a worrying indicator of the deteriorating health and humanitarian situation in the Strip.

In press statements he made today, Sunday, al-Barsh explained that the number of monthly births has decreased from approximately 26,000 to around 17,000, due to the harsh living conditions faced by pregnant women.

He pointed out that low birth weight has become a widespread phenomenon in the Gaza Strip, attributing this to maternal malnutrition and the prevention of the entry of essential nutritional supplements, which directly impacts the health of fetuses and newborns.

He added that the Israeli occupation deliberately targeted fertility clinics, noting that the bombing of the Al-Basma Center resulted in the burning of nitrogen cylinders and the complete destruction of approximately 4,000 fertilized embryos, a blow he described as serious to the future of reproductive health in the Strip.

This comes in light of the genocide being perpetrated by the occupying state in the Gaza Strip since October 7, 2023, with American and European support, which has included killing, starvation, destruction, displacement and arrest in complete disregard of international appeals and orders of the International Court of Justice to stop it. complete disregard of international appeals and orders of the International Court of Justice to stop it.
