A Palestinian infant died from the bitter cold in Khan Younis, southern Gaza Strip, amid deteriorating humanitarian conditions and a lack of heating in displacement camps.
The Palestinian Ministry of Health in Gaza said on Saturday that the 27-day-old baby, Aisha al-Agha, died as a result of severe exposure to the cold.
According to Gaza health officials, the death toll of children from the cold in displacement camps has risen to eight since the beginning of the current winter season.
Since the ceasefire agreement came into effect on October 10, Israel has failed to fulfill its obligations under the agreement, including allowing the entry of shelter materials such as tents and mobile homes, as well as building materials for reconstruction and the rehabilitation of water and sanitation networks, according to official data.
During the recent storm that struck the Gaza Strip, hundreds of displaced persons’ tents were flooded, and a number of residential buildings damaged by previous Israeli bombings collapsed, resulting in casualties.
The beleaguered Gaza Strip is facing extremely harsh humanitarian conditions, with a severe shortage of adequate shelter, heating, and basic healthcare, which exposes the Strip’s residents, especially children, the elderly, and the sick, to increasing risks to their lives as the harsh climatic conditions intensify.
