The Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said that 10 children in Gaza have died from hypothermia since the start of winter, calling for unimpeded and continuous access for aid to all areas of Gaza.
Ghebreyesus wrote on the X platform that “as the weather gets colder and the rains get heavier, children and families sheltering in poorly insulated temporary shelters are facing harsh conditions with little protection from the elements.”
He also warned that winter conditions, coupled with severe overcrowding and a lack of water and sanitation, increase the risk of disease outbreaks and acute respiratory infections, as well as the number of critical cases requiring intensive care.
He stated that the WHO continues to support health facilities with essential medicines and equipment, and will also provide blankets and warm hats for newborns and thermal blankets to protect patients from the cold.
Ghebreyesus reiterated the WHO’s calls for “continuous and unhindered access to the Gaza Strip,” and urged the timely entry of essential medical supplies and equipment, as well as winter supplies and shelter, deeming them “crucial for saving lives.”
