A dangerous escalation in Israeli violations against Palestinian journalists

The Palestinian Journalists Syndicate recorded a significant increase in the scale and severity of Israeli violations against Palestinian journalists during January.

According to documentation by the Syndicate’s Committee for Freedoms, the violations ranged from killings, arrests, shootings, threats with weapons, detention, and prevention of coverage, to physical assaults, targeting of media institutions, and confiscation of journalistic equipment.

The data documented the killing of three journalists while performing their duties in the Gaza Strip, continuing the policy of directly targeting media crews. Six cases of direct gunfire against journalists and eight cases of threats with weapons were also recorded, posing a real threat to their lives.

During the same month, seven journalists were arrested, some of whom were placed under administrative detention. In addition, four court rulings and trials were described as unjust, aimed at restricting journalistic work and attempting to deter journalists. The report documented 42 cases of detention and obstruction of journalistic work, the highest number among all violations. According to the Committee for Freedoms, this reflects a systematic policy of restricting field coverage, particularly during military incursions.

The report also documented 21 instances in which occupation forces fired stun grenades and tear gas at journalists, resulting in several cases of suffocation.

The Committee recorded three cases of direct physical assault on journalists, in addition to seven cases of confiscation and destruction of journalistic equipment, in attempts to obstruct the reporting of the truth and prevent the documentation of violations.

The report also documented four attacks carried out by settlers against journalists, including preventing coverage, obstructing work, and attempting to steal filming equipment, all in the absence of any protection for media crews.

Two cases of media outlets being closed were also recorded, as part of a policy of restricting media outlets, along with the imposition of fines on journalists, aimed at increasing economic and legal pressure on them. In this context, the head of the Freedoms Committee at the Palestinian Journalists Syndicate, Muhammad al-Lahham, affirmed that the occupation’s crimes against journalists reflect a dangerous and systematic escalation in violations, whether through direct targeting, field repression, or legal and administrative restrictions.

Al-Lahham stressed that these facts confirm the continued dangerous environment in which Palestinian journalists operate, amidst ongoing attempts to stifle media coverage and prevent the dissemination of truth.
