The head of the water department at Gaza Municipality, Engineer Tariq Shehab, stated that the water crisis in Gaza City continues to worsen, particularly with the ongoing disruption of the Mekorot water pipeline. He noted that the water shortage has reached approximately 90% compared to pre-war daily needs.
In a press statement issued Tuesday, he explained that the municipality is attempting to mitigate the crisis by operating its own wells and increasing the operating hours of the remaining wells, in an effort to provide a minimum amount of water to some areas of the city.
He called for municipal crews to be granted access to the eastern areas of Gaza City to inspect and repair the Mekorot pipeline.
He also urged the provision of the municipality’s urgent needs, including cement, pipes, and other materials required for maintenance, as well as machinery, spare parts, and pumps, to enable municipal crews to respond to the escalating crisis.
He pointed out that the Israeli occupation continues to restrict the entry of essential supplies into the Gaza Strip, including humanitarian aid and fuel, and is preventing the entry of equipment and materials necessary for municipal operations and infrastructure repairs.
