The United Nations warned on Thursday of a widespread and rapid outbreak of chickenpox in displacement camps in the Gaza Strip, with infections concentrated in the southern governorate of Khan Younis. In a report, the UN stated that the rapid spread of chickenpox in Gaza is due to severe overcrowding in the camps, coupled with the deterioration of water, sanitation, and hygiene services. The sharp rise in temperatures with the arrival of summer has also contributed to the increased spread of the disease. This warning coincides with the UN recording more than 9,300 cases of the disease in just two weeks, and the increasing number of cases has made the health situation in the Gaza Strip extremely worrying. This comes at a time when thousands of tons of solid waste are accumulating, and sewage and stagnant water are being discharged between the tents, exacerbating health risks and threatening a potentially uncontrollable epidemic.
