The closure of Sana’a airport threatens the lives of newborn conjoined twins in need of urgent medical evacuation

Al-Sabeen Maternity and Childhood Hospital in the capital, Sana’a, has issued an urgent humanitarian appeal for rapid intervention to save the lives of newborn conjoined twins, coming from Al-Mahadher district in Saada governorate, who require a complex separation surgery abroad.

The hospital administration and the supervising medical team confirmed that the five-day-old twins suffer from a complex fusion in the torso area, requiring precise evaluation and highly specialized surgical intervention at one of the world’s medical centers, due to the local health facility’s lack of the necessary capabilities and technologies for such delicate operations.

The doctors explained that time is a critical factor in stabilizing their health condition, as any delay in medical transport could cause serious complications and reduce the chances of a successful separation surgery, at a time when the family is unable to travel due to the continued comprehensive travel restrictions and the closure of Sana’a International Airport.

For her part, the Director General of Al-Sabeen Hospital, Dr. Majda Al-Khatib, stated that initial examinations and medical evaluations were conducted for the two children upon their arrival, expressing her hope for an urgent response from international and humanitarian organizations to expedite the transport of the twins and facilitate their medical evacuation, affirming that children’s rights to life and treatment should supersede all considerations.
