Civil defense teams in the Gaza Strip continue their arduous battle to recover the bodies of martyrs from beneath the rubble of buildings and residential blocks destroyed by the Israeli occupation during its war of annihilation. Search operations in the Yarmouk neighborhood of Gaza City, nearly three years after the Al-Taj building massacre, have brought the tragedy back into focus.
On Thursday evening, the Civil Defense announced that its teams had recovered the bodies of 14 martyrs from under the rubble of the Al-Taj building in the Yarmouk neighborhood of Gaza City. They confirmed that the search continues to reach all the bodies still buried beneath the rubble.
They explained that the search and recovery operations are being conducted in cooperation with the Egyptian committee, while rescue teams continue to face significant difficulties due to the massive scale of the destruction and the complexities of reaching the victims trapped under the rubble.
The Al-Taj building tragedy dates back to October 25, 2013, when Israeli warplanes launched intense airstrikes on the Al-Taj 3 building and the surrounding residential block on Yarmouk Street in the heart of Gaza City. The bombing, which involved approximately 20 missiles, destroyed the building and surrounding homes, burying residents alive. The attack also damaged the adjacent street, a bakery, and other civilian property, resulting in the deaths of over 40 people and injuries to many others.
Nearly three years after the massacre, its effects are still felt beneath the rubble, as ongoing searches continue to uncover the remains of martyrs buried under the debris of homes destroyed by the occupation.
