Within the corridors of the Israeli occupation courts, Palestinian families are waging a new battle to recover the bodies of their sons, which have been held for years, in a legal process that attempts to break a reality that prolongs the loss and deprives the families of martyrs of their right to farewell and burial. In the latest development in this process, the National Campaign to Retrieve the Bodies of Martyrs and the Jerusalem Center for Legal Aid and Human Rights submitted 11 petitions demanding the release of the bodies of 11 Palestinian children under the age of 18, whose remains are still being held by the occupation authorities, preventing their families from receiving and burying them with dignity. The National Campaign emphasizes that the withholding of a child’s body should not be used as a punitive measure or a means of pressuring their family, stressing the necessity of subjecting each case to individual legal and judicial review. According to the latest data published by the National Campaign and prisoners’ rights organizations as of August 26, 2026, the number of bodies being held and identified reached 799, including 81 children, 10 female martyrs, and 99 martyrs who were prisoners. An additional 256 bodies are located in what are known as “cemeteries of numbers.”
