UN Special Rapporteur Warns of Worsening Food Insecurity in Gaza

The UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food, Sofia Monsalvi Suárez, warned of a worsening food insecurity crisis in the Gaza Strip, stressing that humanitarian aid is not entering the territory freely.

In remarks to Al Jazeera on Wednesday, Monsalvi Suárez said that the continued restrictions on the entry of humanitarian aid are exacerbating the humanitarian and food crisis facing Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

The UN official noted that aid is not reaching the Strip in the necessary quantity and with the necessary freedom, while high levels of food insecurity persist among the population.

According to the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) projections, more than 1.4 million people, or about 67% of the population of the Gaza Strip, will face crisis or worse levels of acute food insecurity between July and December 2026. This includes an estimated 212,000 people at the emergency level of food insecurity, reflecting the continued significant pressure on the population’s ability to access food.
