The United Nations has warned about the flooding risks threatening around 950,000 displaced people in the Gaza Strip as winter approaches, amid worsening shelter conditions and a shortage of humanitarian and food aid. A report published yesterday on the UN in Palestine website stated that more than 400,000 displaced people face high flood risks, while 294,250 families need shelter support during the winter season. The report, citing the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), noted that the available supplies have only been able to provide shelter assistance to about 18 percent of the families in need. On August 17, the Gaza media office reported that 2.15 million displaced people, spread across 509,393 families, are living in harsh humanitarian conditions, including over 800,000 living in shelters unsuitable for human habitation. The office also warned last September about the winter’s impact on hundreds of thousands of displaced people, pointing out that more than 60 percent of their tents are worn out and need immediate replacement.
