Turkish-Iranian Agreement on Yemen

Turkey and Iran announced on Tuesday, a new unified position on Yemen. This came during a joint press conference of the foreign ministers of the two countries.

The Turkish ministers, Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, and the Iranian, Amir Hossein Abdollahian, expressed their desire to see the ceasefire become permanent. They also indicated that the solution in Yemen remains political.

This is the first joint declaration between Turkey, which embraces Islah party, the Muslim Brotherhood’s wing in Yemen, and Iran, which is accused of supporting Anssarallah movement.

The meeting between the two ministers came after mediation led by Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kazemi between Tehran and Riyadh.

The messages of the meeting were not clear yet, but it coincided with a talk about negotiations in which Islah and Anssarallah participate. It may indicate a regional push towards Yemeni rapprochement in the north, especially since the two ministers affirmed their support for Yemen’s unity, sovereignty and independence.
