Thousands of families in the Gaza Strip continue to go hungry in their tents, even 300 days after the ceasefire agreement. Hunger has become a daily reality, forcing residents to struggle to secure their daily sustenance.
In light of this catastrophic situation, UN and human rights organizations are increasingly warning of a worsening humanitarian crisis and the Strip entering the fifth stage of food insecurity.
In the Khan Younis area of southern Gaza, an Al Jazeera report by Rami Abu Ta’ima details how charitable soup kitchens have become the last resort for thousands of needy people. These kitchens are overcrowded, with empty pots and pans awaiting a single meal to prevent the displaced from starving to death.
Displaced resident Saleh Ashour recounts his suffering, explaining that his tent is only used for cooking with food provided by the soup kitchen. He emphasizes that he and his two sick children are living in dire conditions, completely unable to provide any food or even painkillers to alleviate their suffering. The same applies to another displaced person who recounts his suffering as he stands with his daughters in queues without money or food, bitterly asking what alternatives are available to save his children given the absence of any other source of sustenance.
In the same vein, Saad Abdeen, an official at a charitable soup kitchen, explains that the crisis is worsening daily due to the lack of cash among citizens, the cessation of job opportunities, and the near-complete halt of relief aid. He emphasizes that famine has not ended in Gaza but continues to escalate.
These testimonies coincide with heartbreaking scenes of humanity within the tents, as a Palestinian woman describes the deteriorating condition of her daughter, who suffers from severe malnutrition with no improvement, due to the ban on meat and basic foodstuffs entering the country and the child’s inability to tolerate the available milk.
On the human rights front, Alaa al-Sakafi, director of the Al-Dameer Association for Human Rights, warns of a further deterioration in the humanitarian situation, attributing this to: deteriorating living conditions and increasing reliance on aid;
the complete collapse of the healthcare system in the Gaza Strip; and
the obstruction and prevention of international relief and health organizations from carrying out their work and providing services.
