Gaza Health Ministry: Generator oil shortage threatens to shut down vital hospital departments

The Ministry of Health in the Gaza Strip warned of the consequences of dwindling fuel supplies needed to operate hospital generators, stressing that the ongoing crisis threatens the remaining generators with collapse and disrupts electricity supplies to vital and life-saving departments.

In a press statement, the Ministry said that the fuel shortage portends an acceleration of mechanical breakdowns in the generators, which operate under complex technical and engineering conditions and for extended periods exceeding their operational capacity, amidst a constant need for maintenance and spare parts.

The Ministry explained that the monthly requirement for fuel oil to operate hospital generators exceeds 2,500 liters, noting that providing limited quantities as part of emergency solutions is insufficient to ensure the generators’ continued operation, given the high fuel consumption rates resulting from continuous operation.

The Ministry emphasized that generator failures threaten the power supply to vital medical departments that rely on electricity to provide life-saving healthcare services, which could exacerbate the risks to patients and the wounded if the crisis persists.

The Ministry of Health called on all concerned parties to assume their humanitarian responsibilities and intervene urgently to ensure the entry of the necessary oils and spare parts, and to maintain the continued operation of electrical generators in the sector’s hospitals.
