More than a dozen of UN organizations on Monday announced that 161,000 Yemenis are likely to face starvation during the second half of this year, five times more than estimates.
The United Nations organizations and international aid groups issued a stark warning through the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) report, which comes ahead of an annual fundraising conference hosted by the United Nations on Wednesday.
The Director of the World Food Program (WFP), David Beasley, said that these shocking statistics confirm that we are counting down towards a catastrophe in Yemen and that the time has almost run out to avoid it, and called for immediate funding “to avoid an imminent disaster and save millions.”
IPC is a global partnership of 15 UN agencies and humanitarian organizations working in Yemen, funded by the European Union, the US Agency for International Development and the British Agency for International Development.
The classification tracks and measures the level of food insecurity in conflict-affected areas.
