The office of the UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, announced in a statement yesterday that the situation in Gaza is deteriorating and the humanitarian catastrophe is worsening day by day.
In the statement published on the UN website, Guterres added, “Seven weeks of hostilities in Gaza have resulted in massive losses that have shocked the world. Over the past four days, the weapons have fallen silent. We have witnessed the release of Israeli and foreign hostages held by Hamas and others, as well as the release of Palestinian prisoners from Israeli jails.”
The statement praised the efforts of the governments of Qatar, Egypt, and the US in facilitating these measures and reaffirmed the UN’s commitment to supporting these efforts in every possible way during the past four days.
The statement also highlighted that the UN has expanded the scope of humanitarian aid entry into Gaza and has sent aid to some northern areas that have been largely isolated for weeks.
It emphasized that this assistance barely meets the enormous needs of 1.7 million displaced people, and the humanitarian crisis in Gaza is worsening day by day.
“It is imperative that the dialogue that led to the agreement continues, leading to a complete cessation of hostilities for humanitarian reasons, benefiting the people of Gaza, Israel, and the wider region,” the statement concluded.
