The United Nations Humanitarian Coordinator, Muhannad Hadi, who visited the Gaza Strip last August and compared what he saw of the massive destruction to a “horror film” caused by the destruction of infrastructure by the Zionist occupation, said that the number of orphaned and unprotected children in Gaza ranges between 17 and 18 thousand.
Hadi told a press conference at the UN Centre in Brussels after meeting EU officials: “Children in Gaza are busy collecting firewood instead of going to school or playing, as there is no electricity or gas to cook.”
“The scenes of children selling worthless items on the roadsides, such as a broken door handle or a cup, reveal the extent of the extreme poverty suffered by the population, so that paper money has disappeared from the Gaza Strip, deepening the economic and humanitarian crisis,” he said.
Basic needs such as clean water, coffee, and breakfast have become dreams, he said, 11 months after the Zionist genocidal war on the Gaza Strip, which has already been besieged since 2007.
He noted that residents lack the most basic necessities of life, including a sense of security or the ability to communicate with family members who may be missing.
Hadi warned that the situation in Gaza and the West Bank had direct effects on the entire region.
