The United Nations said Friday that one million children in the Gaza Strip are living “hell on earth”, where about 40 children have been killed every day for the past year.
James Elder, a spokesman for the U.N. children’s agency UNICEF, said that more than a year after Israel’s war against Hamas in the besieged Palestinian territories, “children continue to suffer untold daily harm.”
“Gaza is the true embodiment of hell on earth for a million children. The situation is getting worse day by day.”
Elder explained that since the October 7, 2023 Hamas offensive inside Israel that sparked the war, “conservative” estimates put the death toll among children in Gaza at more than 14,100.
This means that “according to a conservative measure, between 35 and 40 girls and boys have been killed every day in Gaza, since October 7” last year.
According to Elder, figures provided by authorities in Hamas-run Gaza, which put the total death toll at more than 42,400, are reliable.
“There are many, many under the rubble.”
