‘Horrific daily struggle for survival’, UN official warns of level of destruction and despair in Gaza

Access to basic necessities in Gaza has become a horrific daily struggle for survival, said the Director of the UN Human Rights Office in the oPt, Ajith Sungai, warning that after 13 months of unremitting violence, the threat of starvation, disease or shelling is real.

This came in Songhai’s remarks to reporters during the biweekly press conference of the United Nations agencies held on Friday, where he briefed them on his observation during his recent week-long visit to the Gaza Strip, which he pointed out that “this time I was very concerned about the spread of hunger.”

Speaking via video, Sungai said that every time he visited Gaza, “the level of destruction worsens,” adding that he had seen dozens of women and children rummaging through huge landfills.

He stressed the need for significant humanitarian aid to enter Gaza, but “this is not the case. It is critical that the Israeli authorities work to achieve this.”
