The Ministry of Health in Gaza announced on Saturday that the toll of Israeli attacks and battles in the Strip had risen to at least 48,181 dead.
The Gaza Strip is witnessing a fragile calm under the ceasefire agreement between Hamas and Israel that went into effect on January 19.
But the confirmed death toll published by Gaza’s health ministry is rising daily as bodies are found under the rubble, victims identified, or people die from wounds sustained earlier in the war. The ministry said 26 people had been confirmed dead in the past 48 hours, and more than 570 others had previously been confirmed.
It added that a total of 111,638 people were injured during the war, which began in October 2023. Israel has repeatedly questioned the ministry’s figures, which the United Nations considers reliable.
A study published early last month in the British medical journal The Lancet indicates that the death toll in Gaza due to hostilities during the first nine months of the war was about 40 percent higher than the figures recorded by the health ministry in the territory.
