WHO: Ready to meet the needs of patients in Gaza

The Director-General of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said on Thursday that “our teams stand ready to scale up our work to meet the urgent health needs of Palestinian patients across the Gaza Strip and support the rehabilitation of the devastated health system.”

This came in a post on Ghebreyesus’s Twitter account, welcoming Israel and Hamas’ agreement to the first phase of the US President’s plan to stop the war on Gaza and exchange prisoners.

Ghebreyesus said, “I welcome the US President’s announcement of a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of the hostages. This is truly a major step toward lasting peace for both Israelis and Palestinians.”

He expressed his hope that all parties will respect the agreement, so that the suffering of civilians can end and all Israeli prisoners can be returned home with respect.

He continued, “The World Health Organization stands ready to scale up our work to meet the urgent health needs of patients across Gaza and support the rehabilitation of the Strip’s devastated health system.”

The UN official concluded by saying, “Peace is the best medicine.”
