The World Health Organization (WHO) said on Tuesday that more than 15,600 patients in the Gaza Strip need urgent medical evacuation for treatment outside the Strip, given the severe deterioration of the health system after two years of war.
In a statement, the organization stated that hospitals operating within the Strip are facing accelerating collapse due to severe shortages of medicines, medical supplies, and fuel. It emphasized that reopening medical corridors is an urgent necessity to save lives and enable patients to receive appropriate treatment abroad.
The organization noted that more than 15,000 people have lost limbs due to severe injuries during the war, posing an unprecedented challenge to the health system and rehabilitation services in Gaza.
The organization also warned of the exacerbation of health risks due to water contamination, waste accumulation, and the collapse of the sanitation infrastructure, calling for enhanced surveillance of infectious disease outbreaks.
The WHO called on the international community to take urgent action to provide the necessary medical supplies, fuel, and logistical support to keep health facilities operating, noting that the humanitarian situation remains extremely dire despite the declared truce.
