Committee to Protect Journalists: Gaza war deadliest for journalists, Israel bears greatest responsibility since 2023

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has deemed the war on Gaza the deadliest for journalists since 1992.

In a statement released Thursday, the CPJ noted a significant increase in the killing of journalists by Israeli forces since October 7, 2023. The statement also pointed out that the United States has failed to hold accountable those responsible for the targeting of an American journalist in Lebanon, despite international investigators having access to the site of the Israeli attack that killed journalists in southern Lebanon.

Similarly, a report released Tuesday by Reporters Without Borders confirmed that Israel topped the list of countries with the highest number of journalist killings in 2025, continuing its classification as the most dangerous enemy of journalists.

According to the international report, 67 journalists were killed worldwide in various attacks this year, with Israel responsible for approximately half of these deaths. The report explained that the Israeli war of extermination on the Gaza Strip alone resulted in the martyrdom of 29 Palestinian journalists during 2025, which is 43% of the total number of journalists who were killed this year.
