Palestinian Prisoners’ Club said alarming reports from Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya’s lawyer, in coordination with Physicians for Human Rights, indicate that Israeli authorities are intensifying their targeting of him through systematic torture and harsh detention conditions aimed at physically and psychologically exhausting him, in what it described as continued attempts to eliminate him inside prisons.
In a statement on Saturday, the Club called on international human rights bodies, the UN, and the Red Cross to move beyond condemnation and take urgent action to protect Dr. Abu Safiya and secure his release, along with other detained medical staff.
It warned that transferring him to the “Rekefet” section—known for testimonies of torture, starvation, isolation, and denial of medical care—represents a dangerous escalation, confirming the use of prisons as tools of slow killing through deliberate medical neglect.
The Club also said the continued detention of Dr. Abu Safiya under Israel’s “unlawful combatant” law, without charges or trial, reflects systematic targeting of medical workers and raises serious concerns for his life.
