Iran preempted the NATO summit in Turkey on Tuesday by adjusting the rhythm of discussions, especially with a major focus on the Strait of Hormuz.
Exclusive – Al-Khabar Al-Yemeni:
Iranian forces launched new attacks in the strait for the first time in days.
International reports indicated that Iranian forces targeted two oil and gas tankers in the strait.
Qatar announced that one of its gas tankers was hit, explaining that the crew was evacuated amid expectations of the ship exploding following the destruction of its engine.
Media reports also indicated that the second ship was flying the Saudi flag.
The attacks came as the two ships attempted to bypass Iranian lines in Hormuz by trying to cross the newly established American southern passage off the Omani coast. The new attacks caused oil and gas prices to rise again.
The timing of the attacks carried messages to NATO leaders participating in the new summit hosted by Turkey, with US President Donald Trump in attendance.
Iran preempted the summit with strong political messages, including demanding that Trump respect the Iranian people in his speeches, following his talk about destroying power plants and hinting at controlling Hormuz.
The timing of the attacks indicates Iran’s imposition of lines on the European-American summit, where the US president is trying to pressure Western allies to assist his forces in confronting the Strait crisis in exchange for intervention in other files such as Ukraine.
The attacks coinciding with the return of rising energy prices serve as a reminder to European leaders of what the situation would be like if escalation were renewed, especially as Iran had warned against any Western show of force in Hormuz, in response to a joint French-British statement about preparing a multinational force to secure the strait.
