Israeli occupation authorities released 16 Palestinian detainees from the Gaza Strip on Sunday. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) facilitated their transfer through the Kerem Abu Salem crossing to Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in Deir al-Balah, in the central Gaza Strip.
In a statement, the ICRC said its teams received the released detainees at the Kerem Abu Salem crossing and transported them directly to Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital for necessary medical examinations and monitoring of their health.
The ICRC emphasized that its role is limited to facilitating the safe transfer of the released detainees and restoring their contact with their families. It noted that it has been prohibited from visiting Palestinian detainees in Israeli detention centers since October 2023. This release is part of a series of releases that have taken place in the Gaza Strip recently. The ICRC previously facilitated the transfer of 12 detainees on July 15, and 7 on July 13, in addition to 14 detainees released in late June. According to data from the International Committee of the Red Cross, since late 2023 it has facilitated the transfer of more than 2,500 Palestinian detainees released from the Gaza Strip as part of a humanitarian coordination mechanism implemented through the Kerem Abu Salem crossing.
