400,000 cubic meters of waste removed from the historic Firas market in central Gaza

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Palestine announced the removal and transfer of approximately 400,000 cubic meters of accumulated solid waste from the historic Firas Market in the heart of Gaza City.

In a post on its X platform on Tuesday, the UNDP stated that this step represents a significant milestone in addressing the solid waste crisis in Gaza and mitigating the associated public health risks. It also paves the way for the reopening of one of Gaza City’s largest commercial centers.

The UNDP explained that more than 200 merchants and vendors will be able to return to the market, helping to reconnect local supply chains.

The UNDP noted that “the revitalization of Firas Market is part of the broader early recovery efforts undertaken by the Programme to restore livelihoods, economic activity, and the spaces upon which communities depend daily.”
