The Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Network calls for the termination of the “Peace Council” after its failure to protect Gaza

The head of the Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor, Rami Abdu, called for the dissolution of the so-called “Peace Council,” arguing that it has failed to secure a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip or improve the humanitarian situation for civilians. Abdu’s demand comes amid a worsening humanitarian crisis in the Strip, exacerbated by severe weather conditions that have flooded or damaged some 70,000 tents sheltering hundreds of thousands of displaced people, according to estimates by humanitarian and charitable organizations operating in Gaza. Displaced families are facing dire conditions as rainwater leaks into their tents, soaking their bedding, clothing, and essential belongings, while they lack adequate protection and shelter from the rain and cold.

Humanitarian organizations working in Gaza have warned of serious health and environmental consequences resulting from the mixing of rainwater with untreated sewage due to the widespread destruction of infrastructure networks. They also cautioned about the increased risk of collapse of buildings previously damaged by bombing, as rainwater accumulates and puts further pressure on walls and foundations, threatening residents’ lives and increasing the likelihood of injuries. Humanitarian organizations called for the opening of border crossings and the guarantee of unrestricted and unhindered delivery of aid and shelter materials, including caravans, tents, tarpaulins, and materials to reinforce existing shelters. They also urged the authorities to allow the entry of heavy equipment and machinery necessary for clearing roads, removing debris, and addressing the aftermath of the recent storms.
