UN rapporteur asks world about Gaza

The UN Special Rapporteur on the right to adequate housing, Balakrishnan Rajagopal, stressed that the international community has failed to monitor and hold Israel accountable for its violations against Palestinians, including forced displacement and potential genocide.

In an interview with Al Jazeera Mubasher, Rajagopal pointed out that the failure is twofold: most countries have not taken concrete action, and some have been limited to political symbolism, such as recognizing a Palestinian state. Meanwhile, countries continue to allow the shipment of weapons through their territories without imposing any sanctions.
He explained that the International Court of Justice last year affirmed the threat of genocide in Gaza and called for urgent action, but the international community has not taken effective action, including prosecuting Israeli military personnel who participated in the violations, even if they hold dual nationality.
The rapporteur noted that a year has passed since the deadline set by the UN General Assembly for the removal of illegal Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories, stressing that the international community has not taken any concrete steps. He asked, “Will the world simply sit back and watch Israel ignore all its obligations as a member state of the United Nations?”
