For the first time in its history, the UN is showing its fangs in Yemen. What are the dimensions of the proxy war it is waging in the north and south?
Exclusive – Al-Khabar Al-Yemeni:
After months of its decision to halt aid distribution in northern Yemen, the WFP, one of the most important UN organizations that monopolizes donor donations in Yemen, has shifted its war to the south. According to media reports, the program has removed tens of thousands of names from aid lists in Taiz, Aden, Abyan, Hadramout, Shabwah, and all Yemeni regions that do not constitute about 20% of the population and where the program still operates.
These sudden removals in areas suffering severe currency devaluation amidst increasing difficult humanitarian crises indicate that the program, which annually collects around $4 billion, now only supports a few thousand cases, while the rest of the proceeds are looted.
It is not just about removing beneficiaries from the lists of the international organizations in southern Yemen, as the program had previously halted all spending in the north, where over 70% of the population resides, and yet no one died of starvation. What matters now is the timing of the program’s decision to remove tens of thousands of entitled in the south, and this step coincides with a warning from the World Bank, one of the financial institutions implementing an international agenda to avert famine in Yemen, indicating areas under coalition control in the south where lobbies are active under a UN cover.
The economic war led by UN organizations is not the only one; it comes in terms of timing with a diplomatic war that emerged with the statements of the UN envoy regarding espionage cells operating under the guise of organizations, not to mention the report of the international experts that explicitly adopted a demand to tighten the siege on Yemen by closing the last Yemeni sea and air outlets under the pretext of using them for military purposes, as stated in his latest report.
Until recently, the UN was Yemen’s sole window to the world amid war and blockade. However, now it has become another trumpet for American British propaganda aimed at a new escalation in a country that has been targeted for nearly a decade.
