The UN humanitarian representative, Joyce Mswaia, said that the situation in the Gaza Strip is catastrophic.
“Since October 2023, we have provided at least 16 briefings to the Security Council, condemning the death, destruction and dehumanization of civilians in Gaza who have been displaced from their homes, robbed of their sense of dignity, and forced to see their family members burned and killed while alive,” she said in a briefing during the Security Council session on the situation in Gaza.
“Children in Gaza have written on their arms a wounded child whose family has not survived,” she said, asking: “What is this discrimination that is happening? What measures are taken if more than 70% of civilian dwellings are destroyed? The majority of Gaza has been destroyed.”
“Basic goods and services, including electricity, have been almost completely cut off, all of which has led to starvation, and famine is likely today. We are witnessing acts reminiscent of the most serious international crimes.”
She said the offensive Israel began in northern Gaza last month was “an intensive, extreme and accelerating version of the horrors of last year.”
She pointed out that “shelters, houses and schools were burned and bombed until they were completely destroyed,” explaining that “many families whose bodies are still under the rubble; because the Israeli authorities prevent the entry of fuel into the rigs, and prevent the initial response from reaching the victims.
