Gaza: More hunger-related deaths, a situation beyond catastrophic

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) warned that the situation in the Gaza Strip has reached a catastrophic level, with ongoing hostilities and severe hunger.

OCHA noted that more deaths are being recorded daily, with hunger-related deaths reported, including among children. It added that over the past week in northern and southern Gaza, more than 80 community kitchens were able to prepare approximately 380,000 meals per day. In April, the daily number of meals provided by community kitchens exceeded one million.

OCHA warned that communities rely on hot meals once a day from these kitchens, but the amount they can cook is still insufficient to meet the needs of Gaza’s population.

For its part, the World Food Programme (WFP) said its teams are doing their best to deliver food to people, but supplies remain well below half of the program’s daily target.

The WFP said that the organized distribution of hot meals and the bakeries it supports depend on far more aid than actually reaches Gaza.
