The Gaza Municipality stated that the city is threatened with flooding and becomes a humanitarian emergency with every storm due to the widespread destruction of its infrastructure.
In a press statement issued Sunday, the municipality confirmed that thousands of displaced people are living in dilapidated tents unable to withstand the rain and wind. It added that dozens of residential buildings are on the verge of collapse and are currently housing displaced people with no alternative housing.
The municipality explained that it is operating at only 15% of its capacity after the destruction of 135 vehicles and equipment. The drainage system is 80% damaged and is currently operating at no more than 20% capacity.
It noted the destruction of 212,000 meters of sewage networks and eight main pumping stations. The municipality also stated that the destruction of the city’s infrastructure has reached approximately 85%, including 830 kilometers of roads.
The municipality indicated that its staff are working around the clock despite the loss of life, injuries, and displacement of employees. It further stated that there is a severe financial deficit and a halt in revenues, preventing the regular payment of salaries.
The municipality emphasized that its teams are working around the clock despite the deaths, injuries, and displacement of employees. The municipality called for urgent international intervention to bring in machinery, fuel, building materials, and to provide safe shelter.
