The Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), Philippe Lazzarini, confirmed on Saturday that more than 600,000 children in the Gaza Strip are deprived of education.
In a post on the X platform on Saturday, Lazzarini stated that “more than 600,000 children in Gaza have been deprived of formal education for more than two years.”
He noted that these children are experiencing profound trauma amidst the rubble, emphasizing that their return to a safe learning environment is a top priority for UNRWA.
He added that the education of Palestine refugees has been subjected to increasing attacks over the past few years.
He explained that currently, 65,000 children are attending the agency’s temporary learning spaces in Gaza, in addition to nearly 300,000 other children receiving basic literacy and numeracy lessons through digital platforms.
Since October 7, 2023, the occupying forces, with American and European support, have committed genocide in the Gaza Strip, including killing, starvation, destruction, displacement and arrest, ignoring international calls and orders from the International Court of Justice to stop it.
